Why this applies to Glipizide, Metformin

Glipizide, Metformin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Boswellia Serrata interacts with.

Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Metaglip, which combines glipizide and metformin. The glipizide part is handled by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In test-tube studies, boswellic acids appear to slow that enzyme down. If that happens in the body, glipizide could hang around longer and push your blood sugar lower than expected. So the realistic concern is hypoglycemia: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, headache, or feeling unusually hungry or weak. The metformin half isn't really cleared this way, so it's mainly the glipizide piece in play.

I want to be honest though, this is theoretical and comes only from lab data, not real patients. It may not amount to much at all. Still, if you take both, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your blood sugar.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Glipizide, Metformin page

“Glipizide and metformin (Metaglip) already work hard to pull blood sugar down, which is exactly why this list of 307 ingredients deserves genuine vigilance rather than a shrug. Most of them, 239, can lower glucose on their own, and stacked on this pill the combined effect can tip into true hypoglycemia.”
