Boswellia Serrata and Sildenafil Citrate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Boswellia Serrata interacts with whole categories of medication. Sildenafil Citrate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Boswellia Serrata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Sildenafil Citrate

Sildenafil Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Boswellia Serrata interacts with.

Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP2C9 enzymes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Viagra (sildenafil): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 (along with another one) to help clear this drug out of your system. In test-tube studies, boswellia appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, sildenafil could linger a bit longer and feel a little stronger, which might mean more of its usual side effects like headache, flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or a drop in blood pressure.

Now, the important part: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab data, not real-world reports, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since both can lower blood pressure, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you take other blood pressure or heart meds.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Sildenafil Citrate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase or decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Other in vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes at most concentrations, although it may modestly induce enzyme activity at low concentrations.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: your body clears sildenafil (Viagra) mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab studies, boswellia mostly seems to slow that enzyme down. If that happens in real life, sildenafil could hang around longer and build up a bit, which might mean stronger effects like headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or a bigger drop in blood pressure.

I want to be honest, though. This is theoretical, based on test-tube research and not on real patients, so we don't know if it actually matters when you swallow a pill. One study even hinted boswellia could speed the enzyme up at low doses. Since sildenafil already affects blood pressure, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Sildenafil tablets, oral suspension, and injection are used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow disease progression. Revatio (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) and sildenafil oral suspension are also approved for PAH in children aged 1 to 17 years.

Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are specifically indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). Not every formulation of sildenafil is approved for both conditions — your prescriber will choose the right product for your situation.
