Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Chlorpheniramine, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide
Acetaminophen, Chlorpheniramine, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Broccoli interacts with.
Pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for 6-12 days can increase CYP1A2 activity by 10% to 200%. Induction of CYP1A2 activity by broccoli is attributed to its glucosinolate constituents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with this cold and flu combo (Coricidin HBP). Eating large amounts of broccoli (think around 500 grams a day for over a week) can speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. That enzyme plays a role in breaking down some medicines, so in theory your body might clear them a little faster.
For this product, the practical effect is small and mostly theoretical. You might notice slightly less benefit, like a cough (from the dextromethorphan) or runny nose not being quite as well controlled. None of these three ingredients are prodrugs, so you won't get a dangerous spike. Normal dinner portions of broccoli won't matter, only steady, large amounts could. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.
