In vitro research shows that Bulbine natalensis stem extract slightly induces CYP1A2 mRNA expression and enzyme activity. Theoretically, this may increase the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates; however, this has not been studied in humans.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel combo). In lab and test-tube studies, Bulbine natalensis appeared to slightly speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down estrogen. If that enzyme works faster, your hormone levels could theoretically drop a little lower than intended. With a birth control pill, weaker hormone levels can mean things like breakthrough bleeding or spotting, and in the bigger picture, less reliable pregnancy protection.

I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern from cell studies, never tested in people, so we really don't know if it matters in real life. Since this supplement also raises liver and kidney safety questions, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Your birth control pill (Ovral, Lo/Ovral and similar) relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to be broken down. In a lab dish, Bulbine natalensis seemed to speed up that enzyme. If the same thing happened in your body, it could clear the estrogen and progestin out faster, which in theory means lower hormone levels and weaker protection. The practical worry there is reduced contraceptive reliability, possible breakthrough bleeding or spotting, and a higher chance of an unplanned pregnancy.

I want to be honest though: this is only a test-tube finding, not something proven in people, so we can't say how big the effect really is. Given that uncertainty (and Bulbine's own liver and kidney concerns), please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the honest picture: your birth control pill (ethinyl estradiol with norgestrel) is moved around the body partly by a transporter called p-glycoprotein. In lab dishes, Bulbine natalensis seemed to turn up the gene for that transporter. If that played out in real life, it could push more of the hormones out and possibly lower their levels a bit. With a contraceptive, anything that weakens it raises a theoretical worry about reduced protection against pregnancy or more breakthrough spotting.

I want to be clear, though, that this is based only on test-tube work, not on people, and the actual effect on the pill is unproven. The supplement itself also carries liver and kidney safety questions. Please don't change anything on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
