Cabbage and Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate

Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Cabbage interacts with.

Theoretically, cabbage might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Some animal research suggests that cabbage or its constituent indole-3-carbinol might increase drug metabolism and elimination by stimulating CYP1A2 activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: caffeine is cleared from your body mostly by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Cabbage, and a compound in it called indole-3-carbinol, may gently speed that enzyme up. If that happens, your body could clear caffeine a little faster, which in theory means you might feel less of its kick, less alertness or wakefulness, from the same dose.

Now, the honest part: this is based on lab and animal studies only, not solid human evidence, so the real-world effect is probably small. Normal amounts of cabbage on your plate are very unlikely to matter. If you're eating large amounts or taking concentrated cabbage supplements, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate page

“Caffeine and sodium benzoate is itself a stimulant medication, so the supplements most likely to cause trouble are the ones doing the same job. Seven of the 208 ingredients on file rate major, several of them stimulant herbs such as ephedra that can pile extra blood pressure and heart strain onto a drug already revving the nervous system.”

About Cabbage

What is Cabbage?

Cabbage
  • Breast engorgement during breastfeeding
  • Joint pain and swelling (topical)
  • Digestive and stomach upset
  • General nutrition and antioxidant support
  • Skin and minor inflammation (topical)

Cabbage is a nutritious, low-calorie vegetable that is safe to eat as food and is sometimes applied to the skin as a leaf wrap for breast engorgement or sore joints. Most medicinal claims are based on tradition or limited research, with the strongest (though still modest) evidence being for cooling cabbage leaves on engorged breasts. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using cabbage in large amounts or as a treatment.
