Why this applies to Insulin Lispro

Theoretically, cabbage might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal and in vivo research suggests that cabbage might have hypoglycemic effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: insulin lispro already lowers your blood sugar, and there's a theory that cabbage might nudge it a little lower too. So in theory, stacking the two could raise your chance of hypoglycemia, meaning low blood sugar that can leave you shaky, sweaty, dizzy, confused, or even faint.

The important thing to know is that this is only a theoretical concern, based mostly on animal and lab studies, not on real people eating dinner. Cabbage in normal food amounts is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cabbage extracts or supplements are where I'd be a bit more cautious. Keep doing your usual glucose checks, and if you plan to use cabbage as a supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first. Never change your insulin dose on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin Lispro page

“Blood sugar is the entire subject of this list. Insulin lispro (Admelog) is a rapid mealtime insulin dosed to bring glucose down after eating, and the supplements below can shove that same number around, most of them downward, which risks a genuine low.”

About Cabbage

What is Cabbage?

Cabbage
  • Breast engorgement during breastfeeding
  • Joint pain and swelling (topical)
  • Digestive and stomach upset
  • General nutrition and antioxidant support
  • Skin and minor inflammation (topical)

Cabbage is a nutritious, low-calorie vegetable that is safe to eat as food and is sometimes applied to the skin as a leaf wrap for breast engorgement or sore joints. Most medicinal claims are based on tradition or limited research, with the strongest (though still modest) evidence being for cooling cabbage leaves on engorged breasts. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using cabbage in large amounts or as a treatment.
