Verapamil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Cabbage interacts with.

Theoretically, cabbage might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Some animal research suggests that cabbage or its constituent indole-3-carbinol might increase drug metabolism and elimination by stimulating CYP1A2 activity.

Here's the basic idea with cabbage and verapamil. Cabbage contains a compound called indole-3-carbinol, and in lab and animal studies it appears to rev up a liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that helps break down certain medicines. Verapamil isn't a prodrug, so if your body clears it faster, you'd have less drug working, which could mean weaker blood pressure control, more chest pain (angina), or a faster heart rate than your verapamil is meant to keep in check.

Now, the reassuring part: this is only theoretical and based on animal data, not people. Normal amounts of cabbage in meals are very unlikely to cause a problem. If you're thinking about concentrated cabbage extracts or large supplement doses, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Most medicinal claims are based on tradition or limited research, with the strongest (though still modest) evidence being for cooling cabbage leaves on engorged breasts. About Verapamil

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
