Drug & supplement interaction

Cabbage + Valsartan

Valsartan brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Cabbage and Valsartan in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Cabbage and Valsartan

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Valsartan and Cabbage in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Valsartan

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Valsartan is filed under 4 classifications — including angiotensin receptor blockers (arbs), cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) substrates, antihypertensive drugs. Cabbage has documented interactions with 6 drug classes — the most serious being acetaminophen (tylenol, others) (moderate), antidiabetes drugs (moderate) and cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates (moderate) — and none of Valsartan’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Cabbage and Valsartan May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

“Some preliminary clinical research shows that application of cabbage leaf wraps to knee joints for at least 2 hours daily for 4 weeks is generally well-tolerated. Of the 27 patients using cabbage leaf wraps in this study, one patient reported an itching and burning sensation during the application. This patient was later found to have shingles, which may explain the adverse event.”

Listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Valsartan. Read the label on DailyMed ›

Reported for Cabbage but not commonly for Valsartan: an allergic reaction, a skin rash and itching.

Effects for Valsartan come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Cabbage come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 242,792 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Valsartan that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

About Cabbage

What is Cabbage?

Cabbage
  • Breast engorgement during breastfeeding
  • Joint pain and swelling (topical)
  • Digestive and stomach upset
  • General nutrition and antioxidant support
  • Skin and minor inflammation (topical)

Cabbage is a nutritious, low-calorie vegetable that is safe to eat as food and is sometimes applied to the skin as a leaf wrap for breast engorgement or sore joints. Most medicinal claims are based on tradition or limited research, with the strongest (though still modest) evidence being for cooling cabbage leaves on engorged breasts. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using cabbage in large amounts or as a treatment.

Brassica oleracea · Brassicaceae (Cruciferae) · Leaves (head); also juice and extracts · Fresh vegetable, raw leaves, juice, fermented (sauerkraut), capsules, and topical leaf wraps

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Cabbage is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Cabbage record says about it on its own.

Cabbage: dosing

There is no standardized medicinal dose for cabbage. As a food, it can be eaten freely as part of a balanced diet. For breast engorgement, a common traditional approach is to apply clean, chilled cabbage leaves to the breasts for a limited time and remove them once they wilt or symptoms ease. For supplements or juice, follow the product label.

About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and to lower the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have reduced heart function. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (generic) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.

Taking Cabbage and Valsartan Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Cabbage with Valsartan?
We do not list a known interaction between Cabbage and Valsartan. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Cabbage and Valsartan have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to one of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
How was the Cabbage and Valsartan combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Valsartan is filed under 4 classifications, and Cabbage has documented interactions with 6 drug classes — none of Valsartan's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Cabbage interact with any other medications?
Yes. Cabbage has 325 documented drug interactions in our database — Valsartan is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
Does Valsartan interact with any supplements?
Yes. Valsartan has documented interactions with 182 supplements in our database — Cabbage is not one of them. The Valsartan interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
