ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Metformin
Metformin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Cabbage interacts with.
Animal and in vivo research suggests that cabbage might have hypoglycemic effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: cabbage may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. Since metformin already works to bring your sugar down, eating a lot of cabbage on top of it could, in theory, push your numbers a little lower than expected. That might show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded, though metformin alone rarely causes serious lows.
I want to be honest about the evidence: this comes from animal and lab studies, not strong human research, so it's more of a theoretical concern. Cabbage as a normal part of meals is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated cabbage supplements or large amounts daily, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your readings.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Metformin
This page covers Cabbage only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Metformin page lists 258 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate) and Agaricus Mushroom (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 217 moderate · 39 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metformin page
“Siberian cocklebur is the ingredient I most want anyone taking metformin (Glucophage) to know about. It has caused severe low blood sugar in people, documented in humans, and it should not be combined with any glucose-lowering medication.”

About Cabbage
What is Cabbage?
- Breast engorgement during breastfeeding
- Joint pain and swelling (topical)
- Digestive and stomach upset
- General nutrition and antioxidant support
- Skin and minor inflammation (topical)
Cabbage is a nutritious, low-calorie vegetable that is safe to eat as food and is sometimes applied to the skin as a leaf wrap for breast engorgement or sore joints. Most medicinal claims are based on tradition or limited research, with the strongest (though still modest) evidence being for cooling cabbage leaves on engorged breasts. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using cabbage in large amounts or as a treatment.

Metformin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 4 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Metformin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Cabbage — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
