Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea behind this one: some lab and animal studies hint that cabbage may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. Since Levemir (insulin detemir) already works to bring your blood sugar down, the thought is that piling cabbage's modest effect on top could nudge your sugar a little lower than expected. If that happened, you might notice signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) such as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling unusually hungry or confused.

Honestly, this is theoretical and based on weak evidence, so I wouldn't lose sleep over enjoying cabbage as a normal food. Concentrated cabbage supplements are a bigger question mark. If you take Levemir, keep checking your sugars as usual, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before using cabbage in large or supplement-strength amounts.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin determir page

“Anyone using insulin detemir (Levemir) should treat this list with real caution, because nearly every one of the 242 ingredients on it acts on blood sugar, and most stack extra glucose-lowering on top of the insulin you already inject. Only two carry a major rating, but both deserve understanding first: Siberian cocklebur, which has ca…”

About Cabbage

What is Cabbage?

Cabbage
  • Breast engorgement during breastfeeding
  • Joint pain and swelling (topical)
  • Digestive and stomach upset
  • General nutrition and antioxidant support
  • Skin and minor inflammation (topical)

Cabbage is a nutritious, low-calorie vegetable that is safe to eat as food and is sometimes applied to the skin as a leaf wrap for breast engorgement or sore joints. Most medicinal claims are based on tradition or limited research, with the strongest (though still modest) evidence being for cooling cabbage leaves on engorged breasts. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using cabbage in large amounts or as a treatment.
