Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Mersyndol: it already packs two ingredients that make you drowsy. The codeine is an opioid, and the doxylamine is a sedating antihistamine (the same family as many over-the-counter sleep aids). California poppy is traditionally used to calm and relax, and lab and animal studies hint that it may have its own mild sedative effect.

So the concern is simple overlap. Taken together, you could feel more sleepy, foggy, dizzy, or slowed-down than you'd expect from the medicine alone. I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical interaction based mostly on lab work, not strong human studies. Still, since both already tug you toward sleepiness, it's worth running it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
