Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Calotropis naturally contains heart-active compounds called cardiac glycosides, the same family of chemicals as the heart drug digoxin. These get more dangerous when your body's potassium runs low. Your laxative product, especially the stimulant part (phenolphthalein), can pull potassium out of your system if you use it heavily or for too long, mainly through frequent loose stools. So the two together could theoretically set the stage for heart rhythm problems.

This is a theory based on how these things work, not something proven in people, so don't panic. Still, since calotropis itself can be toxic, I'd avoid taking it internally and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining it with any laxative.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Docusate Calcium, Phenolphthalein page

“Anyone taking Doxidan (docusate calcium with phenolphthalein) is already on a stimulant laxative, and many herbal constipation remedies work exactly the same way. That overlap is why this list earns real caution.”

About Calotropis

What is Calotropis?

  • Skin conditions and wounds (traditional, topical)
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Digestive complaints
  • Coughs and respiratory issues
  • Traditional Ayurvedic and folk remedies

Calotropis is a milkweed-family plant long used in traditional medicine, but its milky latex and other parts are potentially toxic and can harm the eyes, skin, and heart. Human evidence for any health benefit is very limited, and the risk of poisoning is real, so it should not be taken internally without expert medical supervision.
