Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Calotropis interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of calotropis and potassium depleting diuretics can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the gist with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). This water pill helps your body flush out extra salt and fluid, but it can also lower your potassium over time. Calotropis contains natural cardiac glycosides (heart-acting compounds), and those can become more dangerous when your potassium drops. So the worry isn't that one changes how the other is broken down. It's that low potassium from the diuretic could make the plant's heart effects more toxic.

I'll be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not strong human studies. Still, calotropis can be genuinely poisonous, so I wouldn't take it internally at all. If you're set on it, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist first, especially since they may already be watching your potassium.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
