Here's a small wrinkle worth knowing if you're on this birth control pill (the mestranol and norethindrone combo) and also use cannabis. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down THC, the part of cannabis that gets you high. This pill can act as a mild blocker of that same enzyme. So in theory, it could slow how fast THC clears out, letting it build up a bit and making cannabis feel stronger or last longer (think more drowsiness, dizziness, or a foggy head).

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern based on how the chemistry works, not something proven in real people. For most folks it likely won't be a big deal. Still, if you notice cannabis hitting harder than usual, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Mestranol, Norethindrone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, cannabis may increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that cannabis can inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 enzymes, which might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP3A4 metabolism of testosterone; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

This birth control pill combines an estrogen (mestranol) and a progestin (norethindrone), and your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear those hormones. Lab studies suggest cannabis may slow that same enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let hormone levels drift a little higher, which might mean more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

I'll be honest with you: this is based only on test-tube research, not on real people, so the effect is uncertain and probably small for most folks. It's not a reason to panic or stop anything. If you use cannabis regularly and notice new symptoms, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on it.
