Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with carob and your crizotinib (Xalkori). Carob is loaded with fiber and tannins, and the concern on file is simply about absorption. The idea is that carob taken in the gut at the same time as a swallowed pill could bind to it a little and keep some of the medicine from being soaked up. In theory, that could mean slightly less crizotinib getting into your body, which matters because this is a cancer drug you want working at full strength.

Honestly, this is a weak, theoretical worry based on lab studies, mostly about minerals, not crizotinib specifically. Enjoying carob as a food is unlikely to be a big deal. To be safe, just separate them: take your crizotinib first, then have carob 30 to 60 minutes later. Run it by your oncology pharmacist if you use carob regularly.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

About Crizotinib

What Is Crizotinib Used For?

Brand name: Xalkori

Xalkori (crizotinib) is used to treat adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for the ALK or ROS1 gene abnormality, as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Xalkori is also used to treat pediatric patients aged 1 year and older and young adults with relapsed or refractory systemic ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). Additionally, it treats adult and pediatric patients aged 1 year and older with unresectable, recurrent, or refractory ALK-positive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT). Note: Xalkori's safety and effectiveness in older adults with relapsed or refractory ALK-positive ALCL have not been established.
