Cauliflower and Cisplatin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Cisplatin and Cauliflower in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Cauliflower safety at a glance

Pregnancy Generally safe Cauliflower as a normal food is considered safe in pregnancy; concentrated supplements are not well studied.
Breastfeeding Generally safe Eating cauliflower is generally safe while breastfeeding, though some parents notice it makes babies gassier.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Cisplatin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Cisplatin is filed under 6 classifications — including platinum agents, alkylating agents, immunosuppressants. Cauliflower has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates (moderate) — and none of Cisplatin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Cisplatin’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Cauliflower. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Cisplatin’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 10 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • An electrolyte imbalance Worth acting on
  • Loss of vision Worth acting on
  • Low magnesium Worth acting on
  • Hearing loss Worth acting on
  • A stroke or mini-stroke Worth acting on
  • Dehydration Worth acting on
  • Low sodium Worth acting on
  • A low white blood cell count Worth acting on mentioned in 12.2% of FDA reports for Cisplatin
  • Low potassium Worth acting on
  • A heart attack Worth acting on

Showing the 10 most notable of 33 label-listed effects — ranked by how unusual each one is across medicines generally, with serious effects weighted up.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Cisplatin. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 77,669 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Cisplatin that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Cauliflower’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Cauliflower side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Cauliflower has no side effects.

Overlapping uses

What Cisplatin Is Prescribed For, and What Cauliflower Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Cisplatin is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Cauliflower is a supplement: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Cisplatin is prescribed for: Cisplatin Injection is used to treat three types of cancer. For metastatic testicular tumors and metastatic ovarian tumors, it is used as part of combination chemotherapy — alongside other approved cancer medicines — in patients who have already had surgery and/or radiation therapy. For metastatic ovarian tumors, it can also be used alone as a second-line treatment when standard chemotherapy has stopped working and cisplatin has not been tried before. For advanced bladder cancer (specifically transitional cell bladder cancer) that can no longer be treated with surgery or radiation, Cisplatin Injection is used as a single agent.

Cauliflower has been studied for:

    Cauliflower for bladder cancer

Epidemiologic research has found that eating about 1 cup per week of cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, or collards, is associated with a 30% decreased risk of developing bladder cancer in men and women.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Cisplatin on your own; if you are taking Cauliflower for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cisplatin page

“Kidney damage is the risk I would flag first for anyone receiving cisplatin (Platinol-AQ). Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug that already stresses the kidneys, and two of the three major-rated interactions on this list, Siberian cocklebur and asarabacca, involve herbs that can injure the kidneys on their own, stacking harm on an organ t…”

About Cauliflower

What is Cauliflower?

  • General nutrition and a low-carb vegetable
  • Source of vitamin C and fiber
  • Antioxidant support
  • Digestive and gut health
  • Part of a heart-healthy diet

Cauliflower is a nutritious cruciferous vegetable that provides vitamin C, fiber, and plant compounds called glucosinolates. As a food it is healthy and safe for most people, but there is no strong proof that cauliflower supplements treat or prevent any specific disease. Enjoy it as part of a balanced diet rather than relying on pills.

Brassica oleracea var. botrytis · Brassicaceae · Edible flower head (curd); leaves and stalk are also eaten · Fresh or frozen vegetable, cooked dishes, riced cauliflower, powder, and capsules or extracts

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Cauliflower is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Cauliflower record says about it on its own.

Cauliflower: dosing

There is no established medicinal dose for cauliflower. As a food, it is simply included as one of several vegetable servings in a balanced diet, and there is no specific amount you must reach to be healthy. For cauliflower powders, capsules, or extracts, follow the directions on the product label, since strengths vary widely between products and none is standardized.

This page lists the shared uses and how strong the evidence is for Cauliflower in each. That is a conversation for your prescriber, especially if Cisplatin is being adjusted to a target.
How was the Cauliflower and Cisplatin combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Cisplatin is filed under 6 classifications, and Cauliflower has documented interactions with 1 drug class — none of Cisplatin's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Cauliflower interact with any other medications?
Yes. Cauliflower has 186 documented drug interactions in our database — Cisplatin is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
