Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the thing to know about pairing chlorella with sparfloxacin (Zagam). Sparfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and one of its better-known quirks is that it makes your skin much more sensitive to sunlight. Even brief sun exposure can lead to an exaggerated sunburn, redness, or a rash on uncovered skin.

Chlorella, on its own, has been linked in a handful of case reports to similar sun-triggered skin reactions. So the worry here is simply additive: two things that can make your skin react to sunlight, stacked together. This is a theoretical concern based on how each behaves, not proven harm, so don't panic. Just be smart about sun protection (sunscreen, hat, covered skin) while on this antibiotic, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you'd like.
