Why this applies to Amlodipine

Amlodipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Clove interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Your body clears amlodipine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Clove's main compound, eugenol, has been shown to slow that same enzyme down, at least in lab tests. If it did the same thing in people, your amlodipine could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might nudge its blood-pressure-lowering effect higher. In real life that could mean more dizziness, flushing, swelling in the ankles, or feeling lightheaded when you stand up.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only seen in test-tube and animal studies, not in actual patients, and the everyday clove you cook or bake with is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are where I'd be more cautious. If you're using those regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up.

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Norliqva

Amlodipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6–17 years. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Sdamlo (oral solution) is specifically indicated for hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

Amlodipine also treats coronary artery disease in adults, including chronic stable angina (chest pain with exertion), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina, caused by coronary artery spasms), and documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
