Why this applies to Flutamide

Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Clove interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP1A2 in a dose-dependent manner,. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break down flutamide. Lab studies suggest that eugenol, the main oil in clove, can slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let flutamide build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its typical side effects, things like nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, or stress on the liver.

Now the reassuring part: this has only been seen in test tube studies, never confirmed in real people, so the concern is mostly theoretical. A sprinkle of clove in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or capsules taken daily are a different story. Before adding those, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Here's the gist for flutamide. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process this medication. In lab studies (test tubes only, not people), eugenol, the main compound in clove, was shown to slow down CYP3A4. If that happened in your body, flutamide could build up a bit more than expected, which might mean a higher chance of side effects like liver irritation, diarrhea, nausea, or hot flashes.

I want to keep this in perspective: this is theoretical and based only on lab work, not real patients. Everyday clove in cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are the bigger question. Since flutamide treats prostate cancer and can stress the liver, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or oncologist before using clove medicinally.

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
