Why this applies to Flutamide

Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Lentinan interacts with.

Laboratory evidence suggests that lentinan might increase the activity of cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 in patients taking lentinan.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include amitriptyline (Elavil), haloperidol (Haldol), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), theophylline (Theo-Dur, others), verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, others), and others.

Here's the gist for flutamide: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to process it. Lab and animal studies hint that lentinan may rev up that enzyme, which could clear flutamide a little faster and leave less of it working against your prostate cancer. In theory, that means slightly weaker effect, which matters since you're relying on this medication to block androgen and slow the cancer.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is only test-tube and animal evidence, and it has never been reported in people. So it's worth a mention, not a panic. Before adding any lentinan or shiitake supplement, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist so they can keep an eye on your treatment.

Laboratory research suggests that lentinan might increase the activity of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking lentinan.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for flutamide and lentinan. Flutamide gets processed in your liver by an enzyme called CYP3A4, which turns it into its active form and helps move it through your body. Lab studies suggest lentinan might rev up that enzyme. If it speeds things along, your body could clear flutamide faster, which in theory might leave a little less of it working against your prostate cancer.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube and animal research, and nothing like this has actually been seen in people taking lentinan. So please don't panic or stop anything on your own. Since flutamide is part of your cancer treatment, just run any lentinan or shiitake supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Flutamide

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
