Irbesartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Clove interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, inhibits CYP2C9 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Irbesartan: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear this blood pressure medicine. In lab studies, eugenol (the main compound in clove) can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in people, more irbesartan could linger in your system, which might nudge its effects up a notch (think dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, or blood pressure dropping a bit lower than expected).

I want to be straight with you, though: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, not on real patients. Sprinkling clove on food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are where I'd be more cautious. If you're using those regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up.

What Is Irbesartan Used For?

Brand names: Avapro, Aprovel

Irbesartan tablets — sold as the brand Avapro and as generic irbesartan — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Bringing blood pressure down lowers the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack. It can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medicines.

Irbesartan tablets (including Avapro) are also used to treat diabetic nephropathy — kidney disease caused by diabetes — in people who have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage. In this group, it helps slow how quickly the kidney disease gets worse.
