Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's a wrinkle worth knowing about losartan. Your liver actually has to convert losartan into its more powerful active form, and the enzyme CYP3A4 (along with CYP2C9) does part of that work. So losartan acts a bit like a prodrug. The lab note on file says eugenol, the main compound in clove, can block CYP3A4 in test-tube studies.

If that blocking happened in people, you might actually get less of the active form, which could mean your blood pressure isn't controlled as well. But honestly, this is only seen in lab dishes, not in humans, and the sprinkle of clove you'd use in cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are a different story. If you're using those regularly, just check with your pharmacist.

Here's a nuance worth knowing: losartan is a prodrug. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to turn losartan into its more active form, which does most of the blood-pressure-lowering work. Clove's main compound, eugenol, has been shown in lab dishes to slow down that same CYP2C9 enzyme.

If that effect happened in people, less of your losartan would get activated, so it could work a bit less well, meaning your blood pressure might not be as controlled as usual. But honestly, this is only theoretical, based on test-tube studies, and it hasn't been seen in real patients. Normal cooking amounts of clove are very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated clove oil or supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Clove is a common cooking spice that is also used in traditional medicine, especially as a topical numbing agent for tooth pain thanks to its main compound, eugenol. Food amounts are generally safe, but concentrated clove oil and supplements can be irritating or toxic if overused, and human evidence for most health claims is limited. About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
