Cod Liver Oil and Albiglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Albiglutide

Albiglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Cod Liver Oil interacts with.

Theoretically, taking cod liver oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some clinical research shows that cod liver oil may lower blood glucose levels in women with gestational diabetes who are already taking antidiabetes drugs when used for at least 12 weeks. However, it does not appear to have any effect on blood glucose when used for shorter durations. Until more is known, use caution.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist if you're using Tanzeum (albiglutide) and thinking about cod liver oil. Albiglutide already works to lower your blood sugar by helping your pancreas release insulin when sugar is high. Cod liver oil isn't broken down by the same pathways, so this isn't an enzyme tug-of-war. The concern is simply additive: over longer stretches of use, the omega-3s in cod liver oil may nudge blood sugar down a bit further, which could add to albiglutide's glucose-lowering effect.

Honestly, the evidence here is thin and mostly theoretical, with one signal seen only after 12-plus weeks of use. Short-term use doesn't seem to matter much. Still, it's smart to watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, dizziness) and check in with your pharmacist before adding it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Albiglutide page

“People injecting albiglutide (Tanzeum) once a week for type 2 diabetes are often the same people eyeing supplements marketed for blood sugar, and that overlap is exactly where this list calls for real vigilance. Every one of the 239 ingredients on file touches glucose control in some way, most by adding to albiglutide's glucose-lowerin…”

About Cod Liver Oil

What is Cod Liver Oil?

Cod Liver Oil
  • Source of omega-3 fatty acids
  • Vitamin A and D supplementation
  • Heart health
  • Joint and bone health
  • Reducing inflammation

Cod liver oil supplies omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) along with vitamins A and D, and is popular for heart, joint, and general health support. Evidence is strongest for its nutrient content, but proof of specific disease benefits is mixed. Because it contains vitamin A, taking too much can be harmful, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
