Cod Liver Oil and Insulin Aspart

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Aspart

Insulin Aspart falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Cod Liver Oil interacts with.

Theoretically, taking cod liver oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some clinical research shows that cod liver oil may lower blood glucose levels in women with gestational diabetes who are already taking antidiabetes drugs when used for at least 12 weeks. However, it does not appear to have any effect on blood glucose when used for shorter durations. Until more is known, use caution.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical picture if you use cod liver oil alongside your Insulin Aspart (Fiasp). Insulin aspart isn't broken down by liver enzymes the way many pills are, so this isn't an enzyme problem. Instead, the omega-3s in cod liver oil may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of their own, especially when taken for several weeks or longer. Stacked on top of your insulin, that could nudge your blood sugar lower than expected, meaning more chances of hypoglycemia (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion).

The evidence here is fairly soft and mostly came from longer-term use, and short-term use didn't show much. You don't have to avoid cod liver oil, but it's smart to watch your glucose readings more closely when starting it, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection

What Is Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fiasp

Insulin aspart is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with diabetes mellitus. It is approved for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults, and for diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients.

Insulin Aspart Protamine and Insulin Aspart Mix 70/30 is a pre-mixed product that combines a rapid-acting and an intermediate-acting insulin aspart. It is approved to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with diabetes mellitus. It is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis, and because its ratio of rapid-acting to intermediate-acting insulin is fixed, it does not allow for separate mealtime versus background dose adjustments.
