Here's the simple version: enalapril (Vasotec, Epaned) already works to bring your blood pressure down. Coriander, based mostly on animal studies, may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Stack the two together and the worry is that your pressure could dip a little lower than expected. That might show up as feeling lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or woozy when you stand up quickly.

The good news is this is theoretical, and the cilantro you sprinkle on tacos or in salsa is very unlikely to cause any trouble. Concentrated coriander extracts or essential oils are where I'd be more cautious. If you use those regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up, and keep an eye out for dizzy spells.

Here's the gist: some blood pressure medicines, including enalapril, are listed as drugs that can make your skin a little more sensitive to sunlight. Coriander contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab studies, showed similar sun-sensitizing effects. So in theory, pairing the two could make you burn or react more easily in strong sun.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is based on test-tube research and scattered reports, not solid human studies, so it's a weak, mostly theoretical concern. Eating cilantro in your food almost certainly won't be an issue. If you use concentrated coriander extracts or oils, just be smart in the sun (sunscreen, hats, shade) and check in with your pharmacist if your skin reacts.

About Enalapril

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned

Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children older than one month, and to treat symptomatic heart failure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

It is also used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction — when the heart's pumping ability is reduced but the person doesn't yet have obvious heart failure symptoms — to slow the progression to overt heart failure and reduce hospitalizations. Enalapril maleate oral solution (including Epaned) and enalapril maleate tablets (including Vasotec) share these three approved uses.
