Drug & supplement interaction

Dendrobium + Lonafarnib

Lonafarnib brand name: Zokinvy.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Dendrobium and Lonafarnib in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Lonafarnib states a food rule worth keeping to.

Dendrobium and Lonafarnib

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Lonafarnib and Dendrobium in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Dendrobium safety at a glance

Dendrobium overall Use caution Generally used in traditional medicine, but modern safety data in people is limited.
Pregnancy Avoid Not enough safety information, so it is best avoided during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid No reliable safety data while breastfeeding, so avoid use.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Lonafarnib

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Lonafarnib is filed under 5 classifications — including cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) substrates, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) inhibitors, nephrotoxic drugs. Dendrobium has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being anticonvulsants (moderate), seizure threshold lowering drugs (moderate) and antihypertensive drugs (minor) — and none of Lonafarnib’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Dendrobium Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Lonafarnib. It is the side-effect record for Dendrobium on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Dendrobium, this list is the first place to look.

  • Anxiety or restlessness / Trouble sleeping / Stomach upset Additional detail

“Orally, a thorough evaluation of safety outcomes has not been conducted. The only reports of adverse effects, including jitteriness, upset stomach, and insomnia, are related to the use of a combination product that was found to contain amphetamine-like ingredients. It is unclear whether any of these effects can be attributed to dendrobium.”

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Dendrobium — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Lonafarnib’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Lonafarnib column appears here.

How to take them

Some Lonafarnib Products Have a Food Rule — Dendrobium Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Lonafarnib says to take it with food. If you take Dendrobium on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Lonafarnib with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Lonafarnib products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

If a dose is missed, take the dose as soon as possible with food, up to 8 hours prior to the next scheduled dose.

From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for Lonafarnib — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. See the Lonafarnib drug page ›

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Lonafarnib

This page covers Dendrobium only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Lonafarnib page lists 160 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Asarabacca (major), Grapefruit (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major) and St. John's Wort (major).

By severity: 5 major · 115 moderate · 40 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lonafarnib page

“If you or your child takes lonafarnib (Zokinvy) for progeria, treat supplements with real caution. Most of the 160 flagged ingredients cross paths with the CYP3A4 enzyme, the same one that handles lonafarnib, so the traffic runs both ways.”

About Dendrobium

What is Dendrobium?

  • Dry mouth and thirst
  • Supporting digestion
  • General tonic/vitality
  • Eye and skin health
  • Recovery after illness

Dendrobium is a group of orchids long used in traditional Chinese medicine, often to moisten the body and as a general tonic. Human evidence for its modern health claims is very limited, so it should be viewed as a traditional remedy rather than a proven treatment. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding because safety isn't known.

Dendrobium nobile · Orchidaceae · Stems (and sometimes whole plant) · Dried stems, tea, decoction, powder, capsules, tinctures

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Dendrobium is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Dendrobium record says about it on its own.

Dendrobium: dosing

There is no well-established standard dose of Dendrobium. Traditional preparations are usually made as teas or decoctions from the dried stems, while modern products come in capsules, powders, and liquid extracts with very different strengths.Because a proven safe and effective dose has not been set, the best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed them.

About Lonafarnib

What Is Lonafarnib Used For?

Brand name: Zokinvy

Zokinvy (lonafarnib) is approved for patients 12 months of age and older who have a body surface area of 0.39 m² or above. It is used to reduce the risk of mortality in Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) — a rare, severe premature-aging disorder.

Zokinvy is also used to treat processing-deficient Progeroid Laminopathies — a related group of rare genetic conditions — specifically those caused by a heterozygous LMNA mutation with progerin-like protein buildup, or by homozygous or compound heterozygous ZMPSTE24 mutations. It is not indicated for other Progeroid Syndromes or processing-proficient Progeroid Laminopathies.
