The dendrobium constituent dendrobine is reported to have convulsant effects. Theoretically, combining dendrobium with pro-convulsant drugs might increase the risk of seizure. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the thing with Dendrobium and Pimozide (Orap). Dendrobium contains a compound called dendrobine that, at least in lab research, can act as a convulsant, meaning it may make seizures a little more likely. Pimozide is an antipsychotic that, like many in its class, can lower the seizure threshold on its own. Stacking the two together could, in theory, nudge that seizure risk up a bit.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not real-world reports of people having problems. Still, since Pimozide is already a tricky medication, I'd run Dendrobium past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than starting it on your own.

What Is Pimozide Used For?

Brand name: Orap

Pimozide tablets are used to suppress motor tics (involuntary movements) and phonic tics (involuntary sounds or words) in people with Tourette's Disorder. It is reserved for patients whose daily life or development is severely affected by their tics — it is not intended as a first-line treatment, and it is not used for tics that are mild or mainly cosmetic concerns.

Pimozide is not meant for tics caused by other conditions or medications, and it should not be used for simple tics unrelated to Tourette's Disorder.
