Why this applies to Dalteparin

Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Dong Quai interacts with.

Theoretically, dong quai may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal studies suggest that dong quai has antithrombin activity and inhibits platelet aggregation due to its coumarin components. Additionally, some case reports in humans suggest that dong quai can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, clinical research in healthy adults shows that taking 1 gram of dong quai root daily for 3 weeks does not significantly inhibit platelet aggregation or cause bleeding. Until more is known, use dong quai with caution in patients taking antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs.

Dalteparin (Fragmin) is already a powerful blood thinner, given by injection to stop dangerous clots from forming. Dong Quai contains natural coumarin-like compounds that, at least in lab and animal studies, may slow clotting and make platelets a little less sticky. Stacked on top of dalteparin, the worry is that your blood could become a bit too thin, raising the chance of bleeding problems like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood in the urine or stool.

That said, this is a theoretical concern. Human studies of dong quai haven't clearly shown extra bleeding, and the evidence is mixed. Still, since dalteparin is serious medicine, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding dong quai rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin (dalteparin) injection is used to prevent blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT) in people having hip replacement or abdominal surgery, and in hospitalized patients who are largely immobile due to acute illness. It is also used to reduce ischemic complications — meaning clot-related events — in people with unstable angina or a type of heart attack called non-Q-wave MI, when given alongside aspirin.

Fragmin is approved for the extended treatment of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins or lungs) in adults with cancer, to reduce the chance of clots coming back, for up to six months. It is also approved to treat symptomatic VTE in pediatric patients from birth (at least 35 weeks gestational age) onward. Fragmin is not intended for the acute (immediate emergency) treatment of VTE.
