Why this applies to Dipyridamole

Dipyridamole falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Dong Quai interacts with.

Theoretically, dong quai may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal studies suggest that dong quai has antithrombin activity and inhibits platelet aggregation due to its coumarin components. Additionally, some case reports in humans suggest that dong quai can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, clinical research in healthy adults shows that taking 1 gram of dong quai root daily for 3 weeks does not significantly inhibit platelet aggregation or cause bleeding. Until more is known, use dong quai with caution in patients taking antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Dipyridamole already works to keep your platelets from clumping together, which is exactly why it's used after a heart valve replacement. Dong Quai contains natural coumarin compounds that may have a mild blood-thinning effect of their own. Stack the two together and, in theory, you could tip toward easier bleeding, things like nosebleeds, bruising more than usual, bleeding gums, or blood that's slow to stop from a small cut.

I'll be honest with you though, this concern is mostly theoretical. Animal data and a few warfarin case reports raised the flag, but a human study using 1 gram of Dong Quai daily didn't show real platelet or bleeding changes. Still, since you're on Dipyridamole for an important reason, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Dipyridamole Used For?

Brand names: Persantine, Dipyridamole, Persantin, Persantin Injection, Persantin Retard

Dipyridamole tablets are used alongside warfarin (a blood thinner) to help prevent dangerous blood clots from forming after cardiac valve replacement surgery. It is not used alone for this purpose — it works as an add-on to anticoagulant therapy.

Dipyridamole Injection is used as an alternative to exercise during thallium myocardial perfusion imaging — a type of heart scan that checks blood flow through the coronary arteries. It is given to patients who are unable to exercise adequately for the test.
