Why this applies to Fondaparinux

Fondaparinux falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Dong Quai interacts with.

Theoretically, dong quai may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal studies suggest that dong quai has antithrombin activity and inhibits platelet aggregation due to its coumarin components. Additionally, some case reports in humans suggest that dong quai can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, clinical research in healthy adults shows that taking 1 gram of dong quai root daily for 3 weeks does not significantly inhibit platelet aggregation or cause bleeding. Until more is known, use dong quai with caution in patients taking antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs.

Here's the situation with Dong Quai and fondaparinux (Arixtra). Fondaparinux is already a powerful blood thinner that blocks a clotting factor (factor Xa) to keep clots from forming after surgery. Dong Quai contains natural coumarin-like compounds that may have a mild blood-thinning effect of their own. So the worry is simple: stacking the two could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

I'll be honest with you, this is mostly a theoretical concern. Animal data and a few case reports hint at it, but a study in healthy adults taking 1 gram of Dong Quai daily for 3 weeks didn't show meaningful bleeding. Still, since fondaparinux is so potent, watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, pink urine, or bleeding that won't stop, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Fondaparinux Injection

What Is Fondaparinux Injection Used For?

Brand name: Arixtra

Fondaparinux sodium injection is used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — blood clots in the legs — in adults having hip fracture surgery, hip replacement surgery, knee replacement surgery, or abdominal surgery. For hip fracture patients, an extended course of prevention is also recommended after the initial treatment period.

It is also used to treat acute DVT and acute pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs) in adults, given alongside warfarin. In children aged 1 year and older who weigh at least 10 kg, fondaparinux sodium injection is approved to treat venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins).
