Why this applies to Heparin

Heparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Dong Quai interacts with.

Theoretically, dong quai may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal studies suggest that dong quai has antithrombin activity and inhibits platelet aggregation due to its coumarin components. Additionally, some case reports in humans suggest that dong quai can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, clinical research in healthy adults shows that taking 1 gram of dong quai root daily for 3 weeks does not significantly inhibit platelet aggregation or cause bleeding. Until more is known, use dong quai with caution in patients taking antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs.

Heparin is already a powerful blood thinner that lowers your blood's ability to clot. Dong Quai is interesting here because it contains natural coumarin-like compounds that, at least in lab and animal studies, may slow clotting too. Stack that on top of heparin and the theoretical worry is simple: your blood may thin more than intended, raising the chance of bleeding. That can show up as easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, pink or red urine, or cuts that are slow to stop.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This concern is mostly theoretical, and human studies have been mixed, with one trial showing no real bleeding effect. Still, since heparin itself leaves little room for error, please don't add Dong Quai on your own. Run it past your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Heparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Heparin

Heparin Sodium Injection is used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in veins) and pulmonary embolism (clots in the lungs). It is also used to prevent blood clots after major abdominothoracic surgery, to manage atrial fibrillation with embolization (a heart rhythm problem that can cause clots), and to treat disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a serious condition where the blood clots too much throughout the body.

Additional uses include preventing clotting during arterial and cardiac surgery, treating peripheral arterial embolism (clots in the arteries of the limbs), and serving as an anticoagulant during blood transfusions, dialysis, and procedures using extracorporeal circulation (machines that temporarily take over heart or lung function).
