Eleuthero and Beclomethasone

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Eleuthero interacts with whole categories of medication. Beclomethasone falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Eleuthero in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

1 of 3

Why this applies to Beclomethasone

Beclomethasone falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Eleuthero interacts with.

Theoretically, eleuthero might increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eleuthero can inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. However, it is too soon to tell if this is clinically important. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the short version on combining eleuthero with your beclomethasone inhaler (Beclovent, Vanceril). In lab studies, eleuthero seems to slow down a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain medicines around the body. In theory, blocking it could let a little more of a drug stay in your system. Beclomethasone is a regular steroid, not a prodrug, so if anything it would mean slightly stronger steroid exposure.

That said, I don't want you to worry much here. This is only test-tube data, it has never been reported in real people, and an inhaler delivers a tiny, mostly local dose to your airways. Side effects like hoarseness or mouth thrush are far more about technique and rinsing. Still, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before adding eleuthero.

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

2 of 3

Beclomethasone also falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS.

Theoretically, eleuthero might interfere with immunosuppressive drugs because of its immunostimulant activity.
Animal and in vitro research shows that eleuthero extracts have immunomodulatory effects, including increasing cellular and humoral activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea behind this one. Eleuthero is thought to gently rev up the immune system, while inhaled beclomethasone (Beclovent, Vanceril) is a steroid that works partly by calming the immune response and quieting inflammation in your airways. In theory, an herb that stimulates immunity could work against what the steroid is trying to do.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not from real people, so it's theoretical. On top of that, inhaled beclomethasone acts mostly right in your lungs with very little getting into the bloodstream, so a meaningful clash is unlikely. Still, if your asthma feels less controlled (more wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness), check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

3 of 3

Beclomethasone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, eleuthero might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro and animal research suggest that standardized extracts of eleuthero might inhibit CYP3A4. However, research in healthy human volunteers has found that taking eleuthero 485 mg twice daily for 14 days does not inhibit CYP3A4 drug metabolism.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence B

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version on combining eleuthero with your beclomethasone inhaler. On paper, eleuthero might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways that clears beclomethasone from your body. If that happened, a bit more steroid could hang around, in theory raising the odds of side effects like a hoarse voice, mouth irritation, or oral thrush.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies. When researchers actually gave eleuthero to healthy people for two weeks, it did not meaningfully affect CYP3A4. Inhaled beclomethasone also acts mostly in your lungs with low body-wide levels, so a real problem is unlikely. Still, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

“Most people on beclomethasone (Beclovent, Vanceril) use it daily to keep asthma or nasal allergies quiet, and plenty also take herbal products, which is where this list earns real caution. Of the 202 ingredients on this page, four rate major, and those deserve your attention ahead of everything else.”

About Eleuthero

What is Eleuthero?

Eleuthero
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Physical and athletic performance
  • Stress resistance (adaptogen)
  • Immune support
  • Mental focus and alertness

Eleuthero is an herb traditionally used as an 'adaptogen' to fight fatigue, boost energy, and help the body handle stress. The scientific evidence behind these uses is limited and mixed, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally well tolerated short-term, but pregnant and breastfeeding people and those with certain conditions should avoid it or check with a healthcare provider first.

About Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Beclovent, Vanceril

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (brand: Qvar Redihaler) is used for the ongoing, daily management of asthma in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is a preventive (maintenance) therapy — not a rescue inhaler — meaning it helps control asthma over time rather than treating sudden symptoms.

Important: Qvar Redihaler is not for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Always keep a separate fast-acting (rescue) inhaler on hand for those moments.
