Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Eleuthero interacts with.

Theoretically, eleuthero might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro and animal research suggest that standardized extracts of eleuthero inhibit CYP1A2. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the quick version for flutamide: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help process this medication. Lab and animal studies hint that eleuthero may slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in people, flutamide could build up a bit more than usual, which might mean more of its typical side effects, things like liver irritation, diarrhea, hot flashes, breast tenderness, or fatigue.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is only a theoretical concern seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in humans. So it's worth a quick mention to your oncologist or pharmacist, especially since they already watch your liver labs on flutamide, but there's no need to panic.

Flutamide also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, eleuthero might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro and animal research suggest that standardized extracts of eleuthero might inhibit CYP3A4. However, research in healthy human volunteers has found that taking eleuthero 485 mg twice daily for 14 days does not inhibit CYP3A4 drug metabolism.

Here's the gist if you take flutamide for prostate cancer and are curious about eleuthero. Flutamide is processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test tube and animal studies, eleuthero looked like it might slow that enzyme down a bit, which in theory could let flutamide build up and possibly add to side effects like nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, or stress on the liver.

The reassuring part is that when researchers gave eleuthero to healthy people, it did not actually meaningfully affect CYP3A4. So this is mostly a theoretical concern, rated minor and unlikely. Still, because flutamide is a cancer medicine that needs to work reliably, run any supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

About Flutamide

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
