Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Red Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, red clover might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2; however, a small clinical study found no effect.
In vitro evidence shows that red clover inhibits CYP1A2. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.

Here's the gist for flutamide, your prostate cancer medication. The body relies on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help process flutamide. In lab dish studies, red clover's plant compounds (isoflavones) slowed that enzyme down a bit. In theory, blocking it could let flutamide build up slightly, which might mean more of its usual side effects, like nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, or changes on your liver blood tests.

The reassuring part: this is only a lab-and-test-tube concern. A small human study using standardized red clover found no real change in how the body handled a similar CYP1A2 drug. So a meaningful problem is unlikely. Still, since you're treating cancer, run any new supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

Here's the basics: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process flutamide. In a test tube, red clover looked like it might slow that enzyme down a little, which in theory could let flutamide build up slightly and add to side effects like nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, or liver irritation. But this is mostly lab-dish thinking, not real-world proof.

The reassuring part is that an actual human study found red clover did not change how the body handled a similar CYP3A4 drug. So a meaningful interaction with flutamide is unlikely and minor. Still, since red clover has estrogen-like activity and you're treating a hormone-related cancer, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first before adding it.

Red clover is a plant rich in isoflavones (plant compounds with weak estrogen-like activity) that is most often used for menopause symptoms like hot flashes. The evidence is mixed and generally weak, with some studies showing modest benefit and others showing none. What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
