Glyburide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Red Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, red clover might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9; however, a small clinical study found no effect.
In vitro evidence suggests that red clover might inhibit CYP2C9. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of tolbutamide, a CYP2C9 probe substrate.

Here's the gist with red clover and glyburide. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear glyburide out of your system. In a test tube, red clover's plant estrogens look like they might slow that enzyme down a little. If that actually happened in real life, glyburide could linger longer and push your blood sugar lower than expected, which can mean shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded (signs of low blood sugar).

The reassuring part: this is mostly lab-dish theory. When researchers gave people standardized red clover for two weeks, it did not change levels of a similar CYP2C9 drug. So a real interaction is unlikely. Still, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor, and keep an eye on your sugar readings if you start it.

What Is Glyburide Used For?

Brand names: Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase, Glycron, Micronized, Glynase PresTab, Albert Glyburide

Glyburide tablets are used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the body produces dangerous levels of acids called ketones).

Glyburide may be used alone or combined with metformin when metformin alone is not enough. It can also be used to help transition patients who are moving from insulin or other diabetes pills to a new regimen, under a doctor's guidance.
