Red Clover + Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol
Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol brand names: Yasmin, Gianvi, Angeliq.
Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 drug categories that Red Clover can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of red clover might interfere with estrogen therapy.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Red Clover interacts with whole categories of medication. Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Red Clover in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ESTROGENS
1 of 3Why this applies to Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol
Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ESTROGENS — the group Red Clover interacts with.
Red clover contains phytoestrogens which might have estrogenic activity in some people. Theoretically, red clover might compete for estrogen receptors and interfere with estrogen-containing drug therapy.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing with Yasmin and similar pills: they already contain estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) plus a progestin (drospirenone). Red clover carries plant-based compounds called phytoestrogens that can weakly latch onto the same estrogen receptors in your body. The concern on file is that, in theory, these plant estrogens could nudge against your pill's estrogen activity. It's worth knowing this is a theoretical idea based on how red clover behaves in the lab, not solid proof from real-world studies.
In practice, the effect (if any) is likely small, and the occasional cup of tea probably won't matter much. Concentrated red clover supplements are a different story. Since your pill's hormone balance is what keeps it working, it's smart to run this by your pharmacist or doctor before adding red clover.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro evidence shows that red clover inhibits CYP1A2. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist for your birth control pill (Yasmin, Gianvi). On paper, red clover can mildly block a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and since your estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) gets handled partly by that pathway, the worry is that levels could nudge up a little. In theory that might mean slightly more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, or bloating.
But I want to keep this in perspective. This is built on lab data only, and a small human study using red clover isoflavones found no real change. So the actual risk looks very low. Red clover does carry estrogen-like activity of its own, so if you have any hormone-sensitive concerns, run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro evidence shows that red clover might inhibit CYP3A4 isoenzymes. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: your birth control pill, which combines drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a test tube, red clover looked like it might slow that enzyme down, which in theory could let a bit more of the pill linger in your system. More of the estrogen part can mean things like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting.
The reassuring part is that this is mostly theoretical. When researchers actually tested red clover in people using a CYP3A4 marker drug, they saw no real change. So this is rated as a minor and unlikely interaction. Red clover does have estrogen-like activity of its own, though, so if you're on a hormone pill it's still worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

About Red Clover
What is Red Clover?
- Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
- High cholesterol
- Bone health/osteoporosis
- Skin and hair concerns
- Women's health
Red clover is a plant rich in isoflavones (plant compounds with weak estrogen-like activity) that is most often used for menopause symptoms like hot flashes. The evidence is mixed and generally weak, with some studies showing modest benefit and others showing none. Because of its hormone-like effects, it's not for everyone—talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
