Here's the gist with Yaz (ethinyl estradiol plus drospirenone): red clover carries plant compounds called phytoestrogens that loosely mimic estrogen in your body. The concern on file is that, in large supplement doses, these compounds could compete at the same estrogen receptors your birth control works through. In theory, that tug-of-war might slightly blunt the estrogen part of your pill.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This is a theoretical interaction based on how the chemicals look, not on real cases of pill failure. The occasional cup of red clover tea is very unlikely to matter. Still, since this is your contraception, please run concentrated red clover capsules by your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

Theoretically, red clover might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2; however, a small clinical study found no effect.
In vitro evidence shows that red clover inhibits CYP1A2. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.

Here's the short version for anyone on Yaz (ethinyl estradiol with drospirenone): in a lab dish, red clover can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways that helps clear your birth control. In theory, that could let the hormones build up a little, possibly nudging up side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting.

The reassuring part is that this is mostly test-tube data. When researchers actually gave people standardized red clover for two weeks, they saw no real change in CYP1A2 activity. So a meaningful interaction is unlikely. Still, since red clover has its own weak estrogen-like effects, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.
