Losartan Potassium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Red Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, red clover might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9; however, a small clinical study found no effect.
In vitro evidence suggests that red clover might inhibit CYP2C9. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of tolbutamide, a CYP2C9 probe substrate.

Here's the honest scoop on pairing red clover with losartan (Cozaar). Losartan needs your liver's CYP2C9 enzyme to turn it into its more active form, so it acts a bit like a prodrug. In a test tube, red clover's isoflavones looked like they might slow that enzyme down. If that actually happened in your body, it could theoretically blunt some of losartan's blood pressure lowering effect.

But here's the reassuring part: this concern comes only from lab studies, and a small human study using standardized red clover capsules found no real effect on a CYP2C9 medication. So this is a weak, theoretical worry. Still, it never hurts to mention any new supplement to your pharmacist or doctor, especially while they're tracking your blood pressure.

Here's the gist for losartan (Cozaar) with red clover. In the lab, red clover's isoflavones can mildly slow the CYP3A4 enzyme, one of the pathways that helps process losartan. On paper, that could nudge losartan levels up a bit and, in theory, lead to slightly more of its usual effects like lower blood pressure, lightheadedness, or dizziness when you stand up.

The reassuring part: when researchers actually tested red clover in people using a CYP3A4 marker drug, they found no real change. So this is mostly a theoretical concern, rated minor and unlikely. Food amounts are unlikely to matter, but concentrated capsules are a different story. If you'd like to try red clover, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Red clover is a plant rich in isoflavones (plant compounds with weak estrogen-like activity) that is most often used for menopause symptoms like hot flashes. The evidence is mixed and generally weak, with some studies showing modest benefit and others showing none. Because of its hormone-like effects, it's not for everyone—talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
