Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the thing to know about this pairing: the interaction on file is really about your thyroid extract being the one affected, not your flutamide. When you take flutamide (or other oral medicines) at the same time as a thyroid product, the pill in your stomach can get in the way and lower how much thyroid hormone your body absorbs. That can leave the thyroid part working less well.

Flutamide itself isn't activated or blocked in any meaningful way by thyroid extract, so your prostate cancer treatment shouldn't lose its punch here. The simple fix is timing and spacing. Thyroid hormone is best taken on an empty stomach, and other pills are usually separated from it. Since these supplements aren't standardized, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

About Flutamide

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
