Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's some good news if you're using Unoprostone (Rescula): this is an eye drop, not a pill you swallow. The interaction on file is really about oral medications, where foods and supplements (high fiber, calcium, iron) can bind to thyroid hormone in the gut and lower how much your body absorbs. Since unoprostone goes straight into the eye and works locally to help drain fluid and lower pressure, it doesn't share that swallowing-and-absorption pathway.

So practically speaking, thyroid extract is very unlikely to change how well your eye drops work, and the drops won't affect your thyroid product either. The bigger caution is the thyroid extract itself, since these products aren't standardized. I'd run your full list by your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

  • Unoprostone ophthalmic is used to treat glaucoma (a condition in which increased pressure in the eye can lead to gradual loss of vision) and ocular hypertension (a condition which causes increased pressure in the eye). It is in a class of medications called prostaglandin analogs. Unoprostone lowers pressure in the eye by increasing the flow of natural eye fluids out of the eye.
