Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the simple version. Casanthranol (found in products like Doxidan) is a stimulant laxative. It works right in your gut to get things moving, so it speeds up how quickly food and other substances pass through your intestines. That's exactly where your body absorbs the thyroid hormones from a thyroid extract supplement.

When your bowels move faster, there's a chance your gut grabs a little less of the thyroid hormone before it passes through. The good news is this is rated a minor interaction, and an occasional laxative dose isn't likely to throw your thyroid levels off much. Still, the easy fix is timing: take your thyroid product on an empty stomach and separate it from the laxative by several hours. If you use Casanthranol often, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.
