Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: the interaction on file works in the other direction from what you might expect. It's not that fosamprenavir (Lexiva) changes your HIV control. Instead, taking fosamprenavir and other pills at the same time as thyroid extract can get in the way of the thyroid hormone being absorbed. Food, fiber, and minerals like calcium or iron can bind it up, so less thyroid hormone gets into your system.

This is a minor, well-documented timing issue, not a dangerous one. The simple fix is spacing them out. Thyroid hormone usually works best on an empty stomach, taken at least 30 to 60 minutes before other medicines or meals. Since thyroid extract isn't standardized, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist to sort out timing and whether you even need it.

About Fosamprenavir

What Is Fosamprenavir Used For?

Brand names: Lexiva, Telzir

Fosamprenavir tablets (sold as Fosamprenavir Calcium and Lexiva) are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children as young as 4 weeks old. It is not used alone — it is always part of a combination regimen.

For adults who have already taken protease inhibitor medicines before, fosamprenavir is used alongside a low dose of ritonavir. Once-daily dosing with ritonavir is not recommended for adults who have previously used protease inhibitors, or for any pediatric patients.
