Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the tricky part: liothyronine (Cytomel) is thyroid hormone, specifically the T3 form. Thyroid extract from animal glands also contains T3 and T4, just in amounts that aren't standardized or predictable. So combining the two means you're essentially stacking thyroid hormone on top of thyroid hormone, and that can push you toward having too much.

When thyroid levels run high, you may notice a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, sweating, weight loss, or feeling on edge. Over time, too much can also stress your heart and bones. The absorption note on file is real too: fiber, calcium, iron, and antacids can block thyroid hormone uptake, so timing matters. Please don't adjust anything on your own. Let your doctor or pharmacist guide your dose and which products to take.

About Liothyronine

What Is Liothyronine Used For?

Brand name: Cytomel

Liothyronine (available as tablets under the brand names Cytomel, Liomny, and Liothyronine Sodium, and as an injection under Liothyronine Sodium and Triostat) is primarily used to treat hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) across all its forms — whether the cause is in the thyroid itself, the pituitary gland, or the hypothalamus, and whether it was present at birth or developed over time.

The oral tablets are also used alongside surgery and radioiodine therapy to suppress TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) in people with well-differentiated thyroid cancer, and as a diagnostic agent in thyroid suppression tests. Liothyronine sodium injection is specifically indicated for myxedema coma (a life-threatening form of severe hypothyroidism) and may be used in patients who are allergic to thyroid products derived from pork or beef.
