Theoretically, equol might increase the levels and clinical effects of ethinyl estradiol found in contraceptive drugs.
In vitro research shows that equol inhibits the binding of estradiol to serum proteins. Theoretically, this might increase the concentration of free, bioactive estradiol, thereby increasing the risk of adverse effects from ethinyl estradiol, including headaches, breast tenderness, dysmenorrhea, and weight gain.

Your birth control pill pairs an estrogen (mestranol, which your body converts to ethinyl estradiol) with a progestin (norethindrone). Here's the idea behind this one: lab studies suggest equol may bump some of the estrogen off the proteins that normally carry it around in your blood. If more estrogen is floating free and active, you could feel more of the usual estrogen-related effects, such as headaches, sore or tender breasts, more painful periods, or some water-weight gain.

I want to be honest about the strength of this. It comes only from test-tube work, not from real people, so it's theoretical. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since equol acts a bit like estrogen itself, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.
