Here's the gist of what we know about pairing equol with your birth control pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen and similar combos contain ethinyl estradiol plus norgestimate). In a lab dish, equol seems to bump estrogen off the proteins that normally carry it around in your blood. The idea is that this could leave a little more free, active estrogen floating around, which might slightly nudge up the estrogen-type side effects you already know with the pill: headaches, sore or tender breasts, more painful periods, or some water weight.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube research, not from real people, so it's theoretical and likely minor. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since hormones are involved, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding an equol supplement.
