Norgestrel falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Equol interacts with.

Theoretically, equol might increase the levels and clinical effects of ethinyl estradiol found in contraceptive drugs.
In vitro research shows that equol inhibits the binding of estradiol to serum proteins. Theoretically, this might increase the concentration of free, bioactive estradiol, thereby increasing the risk of adverse effects from ethinyl estradiol, including headaches, breast tenderness, dysmenorrhea, and weight gain.

Here's something worth knowing about this pairing. The interaction we have on file is really about ethinyl estradiol, the estrogen found in combination birth control pills. The idea is that equol might bump up free, active estrogen by knocking it loose from proteins in your blood. But Norgestrel (Ovrette) is a progestin-only pill, with no estrogen in it at all, so that specific concern doesn't really apply here.

On top of that, this is only a theoretical, lab-dish finding, not something seen in actual patients. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since equol gently acts like estrogen and your evidence on it is thin, it's a good idea to run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
