Oestrogen falls under ESTROGENS — the group Equol interacts with.

Theoretically, equol might increase the levels and clinical effects of estrogens.
In vitro research shows that equol inhibits the binding of estradiol to serum proteins. Theoretically, this might increase the concentration of free, bioactive estradiol, thereby increasing the risk of adverse effects from estrogen replacement therapy, including headaches, breast tenderness, and weight gain.

Here's the idea behind pairing equol with your estrogen therapy. Equol is a plant compound that acts a little like estrogen itself. In lab studies, it seems to nudge estrogen off the proteins that normally carry it around in your blood. When estrogen isn't bound to those proteins, more of it floats free and active, which could gently raise your overall estrogen effect.

If that happened, you might notice more of the usual estrogen side effects, things like headaches, sore or tender breasts, bloating, or a bit of weight gain. I'll be honest though: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, not real patient studies. It may never amount to anything noticeable. Still, before adding an equol supplement, run it past your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.
