First things first: European mandrake is genuinely toxic, and I'd never want you taking it in any form. Setting that aside, here's the theory behind how it could affect your Pradaxa (dabigatran). Mandrake's compounds slow down the gut, and when food and pills sit in your digestive tract longer, your body can sometimes absorb more of a drug than usual.

With dabigatran, which is a blood thinner, soaking up extra could mean a bit more drug in your system than intended. That raises the concern for bleeding, things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that's hard to stop. I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical idea based on how these chemicals work, not something proven in studies. Even so, please don't combine them, and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

European mandrake is a highly toxic plant from the nightshade family that was used in ancient and medieval times as a sedative and pain reliever. It contains powerful poisons that can cause serious harm or death, and there is no proof it safely treats any condition. We strongly recommend you do not consume mandrake in any form.

About Dabigatran

What Is Dabigatran Used For?

Brand names: Pradaxa, Pradax

Dabigatran etexilate capsules are used in adults to reduce the risk of stroke and dangerous blood clots in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). They are also used to treat deep venous thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in a deep vein) and pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs), to lower the risk of those clots coming back, and to prevent DVT and PE in adults who have had hip replacement surgery.

In children ages 8 to under 18, dabigatran etexilate capsules are used to treat venous thromboembolic events (VTE — blood clots in the veins) and to reduce the risk of those clots recurring. Pradaxa Oral Pellets — a separate formulation — are indicated for the treatment and prevention of recurrent VTE in younger children ages 3 months to under 12 years.
