First things first: please don't take European mandrake at all. It's a toxic nightshade plant, and we don't recommend it in any form. But here's the idea behind this particular interaction with your timolol. Mandrake's compounds slow down how fast your gut moves things along. When the gut slows, a pill like timolol can sit there longer and get absorbed a little more completely, which could mean more drug in your system than expected.

For a beta blocker like timolol, more drug can mean a heart rate that runs too slow, dizziness, lightheadedness, or blood pressure dropping low. To be clear, this is theoretical, based on how these chemicals work rather than real-world cases. Still, the safest move is simply to avoid mandrake and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Timolol

What Is Timolol Used For?

Brand names: Blocadren, Timol, Timoptic

Timolol is available in ophthalmic (eye) forms and as an oral tablet, and each form has its own approved uses. Ophthalmic formulations — including Betimol, Istalol, Timolol GFS, Timolol hemihydrate, Timolol Maleate eye drops, and Timolol Maleate Ophthalmic Gel Forming Solution — are used to lower elevated intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) in people with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.

Timolol Maleate tablets are used orally for three separate conditions: treating high blood pressure (alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines), reducing the risk of death and repeat heart attack in people who have survived a heart attack and are clinically stable, and preventing migraine headaches.
