Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Estradiol, Norgestimate
Estradiol, Norgestimate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.
Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with Ortho-Prefest (estradiol plus norgestimate): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help process estrogen. Evodia appears to speed that enzyme up. In theory, that could clear the estrogen faster and leave a little less of it in your body, which might weaken its effect. With a hormone product like this, that could mean things like breakthrough spotting or a return of menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, for example).
I want to be honest, though: this concern comes from lab and animal studies, not from people taking this exact medication. So it's more of a theoretical heads-up than a proven problem. Before adding Evodia, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, and never adjust your hormone therapy on your own.
